For more than two decades, the Kenya Model United Nations (KMUN) has provided a platform for young people in Kenya to develop their leadership, diplomacy and public speaking skills. As the oldest and largest student-run youth leadership society in Kenya, affiliated with the United Nations Information Service in Nairobi, KMUN has helped nurture young diplomats who have gone on to serve in different capacities.
It was against this backdrop that students gathered at KU Parklands on Saturday, 26 September 2026, for a mock debate that brought together university KMUN chapters for an afternoon of diplomacy, negotiation and debate.
The Kabarak University KMUN Chapter participated in the mock debate and recorded a notable achievement through Mick Mugo, who represented the United Mexican States (Mexico) in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Committee.
Mugo was named Most Diplomatic Delegate in the UNHCR Committee, earning recognition for his participation and diplomatic engagement during the simulation.
The award highlights the practical skills that KMUN activities seek to develop among students, including research, negotiation, public speaking, critical thinking and the ability to engage with international issues from different perspectives.
Led by its Patron, Pr. Esther Mwende Kapsir, the Kabarak University KMUN team has continued to participate in KMUN activities and provide students with opportunities to apply these skills beyond the classroom. The team's participation in the KU Parklands mock debate was another opportunity for members to engage with fellow delegates and gain practical experience in the workings of Model United Nations.
The chapter also acknowledges the support of the Dean of Students and the University Management, whose support has enabled the team to participate in KMUN activities and other platforms that strengthen students' leadership and professional skills.
Kabarak University congratulates Mick Mugo and the entire KMUN Chapter on the achievement and looks forward to their continued participation in KMUN activities.
