About the Institute
The African Musicology Institute (AMI) is the first Africa-based institute fully dedicated to the rigorous study of African and diaspora musics. Established through a historic partnership in September 2025, AMI bridges the gap between traditional indigenous knowledge and modern digital innovation. We move beyond music as mere entertainment, treating it as a sacred repository of history, philosophy, and community identity.
Core Ecosystem Pillars
- Virtual Museum: An immersive journey through Africa’s musical map.
- AI Knowledge System: Assistive technology for musicological research and pattern analysis.
- Global Media Hub: A multimedia platform amplifying African voices to a global audience.
Formalized through a historic MoU in September 2025, AMI represents a decisive moment for global scholarship. Led by visionaries Prof. Mellitus Wanyama (Kabarak) and Prof. Madimabe Geoff Mapaya (UNIVEN), we are reclaiming the narrative of African sound.
