STUDYPATH + SAGE - Building an AI Tutor That Can Actually Teach

THE QUESTION

StudyPath began with a question:

What would learning look like if an AI could do more than simply answer a student's question?

AI assistants can already explain concepts, generate answers and summarize information.

But Keith Morgan Kiboroh saw a difference between giving an answer and actually teaching.

That difference became the foundation for StudyPath.

The goal was to explore what an AI learning experience could look like when it was designed around the student-not simply around a text prompt.

ENTER SAGE

At the centre of StudyPath is Sage, an AI learning companion designed to make interaction with educational AI feel more natural and engaging.

Rather than reducing tutoring to a chat box, Keith envisioned an AI that could communicate with students through conversation and voice, explain concepts step by step and make learning feel more interactive.

Sage is not intended to replace teachers.

It is designed to provide students with another layer of support when they are studying independently, struggling with a difficult concept or looking for another way to understand something.

That meant building an experience around more than an AI model.

It required thinking about conversation, teaching, retrieval, responsiveness and the way information is presented to a learner.

BUILDING THE SYSTEM

Building Sage became a much deeper engineering challenge than simply connecting an AI API to a website.

Keith worked through real problems involving real-time voice interaction, speech processing, AI responses, authentication, retrieval of learning material and the architecture required to make these systems work together as one experience.

The objective was not to create a flashy demonstration.

It was to build something that could actually function as a learning environment.

That required continuous testing, finding failures and rebuilding parts of the system.

StudyPath therefore became both an education project and a serious engineering experiment.

THE CRIW MOMENT

In September 2026, StudyPath + Sage was presented at Central Rift Innovation Week 2026 at Kabarak University.

The project received First Place - Gold Award.

The recognition marked a significant milestone for Keith because StudyPath had moved beyond the original idea and into a working system that could be demonstrated, questioned and evaluated in front of an innovation audience.

The Gold award became validation that the problem Keith was trying to solve was not only technically interesting, but meaningful in an educational context.

WHY STUDYPATH IS DIFFERENT

StudyPath is not built around the idea of getting students answers as quickly as possible.

It is built around a different objective:

helping students understand.

A general AI assistant can produce an answer and leave the learner to interpret it.

Sage is being designed around a more instructional approach:

Understand the learner. Explain the concept. Interact with the learner. Help the learner progress.

That distinction is central to the vision of StudyPath.

Because in education, getting the right answer is only part of the problem.

Understanding why the answer is right is what creates learning.

THE BIGGER VISION

Keith sees StudyPath evolving into an AI learning environment capable of supporting students across different subjects and learning contexts.

The long-term vision is for Sage to become increasingly capable of adapting explanations to individual learners, remembering learning progress, demonstrating concepts visually and helping students move through difficult material with a more personalized learning experience.

The ambition is not simply to build another chatbot.

It is to explore how artificial intelligence can become a more accessible and interactive form of academic support.

FROM A QUESTION TO A GOLD MEDAL

StudyPath began with a simple question about whether AI could do more than answer questions.

At Central Rift Innovation Week 2026, that question became a Gold-winning innovation.

But for Keith, the award is not the destination.

It is another step toward answering the larger question that started the project:

What if an AI could do more than answer a student's question-and actually help them learn?
