The Kabarak University Electronic Voting Information System (EVIS) was awarded the Public Service Award at the Connected 2023 Summit that was held at the Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort in Diani Mombasa between 2nd - 5th April. The awards, sponsored by Oracle, featured entries from five categories, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Fintech, and Public service.
The EVIS system was developed by the University in the year 2018 in order to address emerging challenges associated with increasing costs of elections, complex logistics, voter participation and integrity of the vote. The system allows for fully online election setup, voting and tallying of results.
The system has been utilized in student association elections at Kabarak University since 2019 to date and was also utilized in the Egerton University Student’s Association (EUSA) elections held on 5th April 2023. The system has led to cost savings, efficiency in the setup and management of the elections, increased voter accessibility as well as auditability and verifiability of the vote.
The EVIS team, led by Dr Moses M Thiga, a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology. is now gearing up to market the system to other universities, technical and vocational institutes, and SACCO’S among other organizations that conduct elections.
