The first day of the 2026 Annual Staff Seminar took a deep, reflective turn in the afternoon as the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry K. Kiplangat, PhD, MBS, OGW, took to the podium. His session, "Modern Leadership in Action: Inspiring People, Purpose, and Performance," moved beyond theoretical management styles, offering instead a practical blueprint for the university's future.
Prof. Kiplangat’s message was clear: in an era of rising institutional pressure and increasing stakeholder expectations, leadership at Kabarak University can no longer be the sole responsibility of those with titles. It must be a collective heartbeat felt in every office, lecture hall, and service point.
The Reflection of a Real Kabarak Moment
The Vice-Chancellor opened with a candid, sobering story that set the tone for the afternoon. He shared an account of a visitor who waited at a university counter for 45 minutes, seen by three different staff members, yet remained unassisted.
He used this "real Kabarak moment" to illustrate a vital point: leadership failure often happens without any bad intentions. It occurs when we lose sight of our influence the moment we think no one is watching. This served as a powerful call for staff to transition from being task-oriented to being people-centered.
Moving from Efficiency to Ownership
A significant portion of the presentation focused on the "Modern Leadership Mindset." Prof. Kiplangat challenged the university's workforce to shed the "excuse culture." He noted that while traffic, systems, or external factors may cause delays, a true leader takes ownership of the outcome rather than hiding behind the obstacle.
He introduced the concept of the "Ownership Mindset," urging staff to ask themselves three daily questions:
- Am I taking ownership or making excuses?
- Am I following the established system or cutting corners?
- Did I show up today with the discipline required of my office?
Inspiring Through Purpose and Performance
For Prof. Kiplangat, inspiring people is not about control; it is about trust. He outlined a strategy for departmental heads and staff alike to foster a growth environment by trusting before controlling and stretching teams before allowing them to settle.
He emphasized that when staff understand the "why" behind their "what," their work shifts from being just a job to a calling. This alignment with Kabarak’s biblical Christian values ensures that performance is not just about meeting targets, but about serving a higher purpose with integrity and excellence.
The Power of Daily Consistency
Closing the session, the Vice-Chancellor shared a powerful analogy of "The Axe and the Oak Tree." Just as a massive tree eventually falls to the person who takes five consistent swings every day, the transformation of Kabarak University depends on small, daily habits.
"What is the 'oak tree' you want to chop down in your leadership?" he asked the audience. The answer, he suggested, lies in the discipline of our daily choices.
This presentation served as a reminder that as Kabarak University continues to grow, its success will be built on leaders who inspire, purposes that are clear, and performance that is unwavering.
