Enhancing Pedagogical Skills: Kabarak University's Three-Day Indispensable Staff Development Training

Kabarak University is committed to providing holistic quality education and is hosting a three-day staff development training workshop in collaboration with Millersville University, Pennsylvania, USA. The training, titled "Intentional Teaching and Total Classroom Participation," aims to enhance the pedagogical skills of the university's teaching staff. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat emphasized the importance of pedagogy in creating inclusive learning environments, promoting student engagement, and aligning curriculum and assessments effectively. With esteemed facilitators from Millersville University, the training workshop aims to empower the staff to deliver higher education to their students.

During his speech, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat highlighted the significance of inclusive education, ensuring that every student, regardless of background, ability, or learning style, has access to quality education. By studying pedagogy, educators can employ strategies for differentiated instruction, accommodating diverse learners and promoting equity and inclusion in the classroom. This approach fosters an environment where all students can thrive and reach their full potential.

The training workshop aims to equip educators with a range of instructional strategies proven to be effective in engaging and supporting learners. Pedagogical approaches such as active learning, differentiation, scaffolding, and collaboration enhance student engagement, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. By implementing these strategies, teachers can create dynamic learning experiences that promote student involvement and enhance overall learning outcomes.

Pedagogy provides educators with valuable knowledge about learner development, encompassing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical aspects. Understanding how students learn and grow enables teachers to create developmentally appropriate learning experiences and tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of their students. By catering to diverse learning requirements, educators can create a conducive learning environment that nurtures student growth and development.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat highlighted that the training workshop aligns with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach embraced by the university and the country. CBE focuses on the skills, abilities, and knowledge that help students perform tasks individually, allowing them to progress based on their mastery of skills or competencies at their own pace. Intentional teaching and total classroom participation, emphasized in the workshop, are critical elements of CBE, providing students with specialized learning opportunities and the support they need to succeed.

The partnership between Kabarak University and Millersville University signifies a commitment to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning at Kabarak. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged all academic staff members to actively participate in the workshop, embracing new teaching approaches and innovative ideas. The objective is to provide opportunities for further professional development and growth. Moving forward, the university administration will monitor the implementation of intentional teaching and total classroom participation across schools and departments, ensuring the integration of acquired skills into everyday teaching practices.
