Kabarak University Annual Law Conference, 2023

Kabarak University Law School is collaborating with Hivos to conduct research on gender and agriculture in Kenya. The research project studies the policies and practices that apply to selected areas of agriculture - governance, land, environment, agricultural methods and inputs, entrepreneurship and labour - to assess the extent to which these match the requirements of gender equality and efficient agriculture. The study hopes to make policy and other recommendations to address the gaps identified. The study relies on both literature review and field survey.

Although the research is about Kenya generally, special focus is trained on five counties – Baringo, Garissa, Kitui, Nakuru, and Laikipia – to provide a basis for understanding family and cash crop farming, sedentary and pastoralist agriculture, and the various cultural contexts. By examining the select counties and the agricultural elements through the gender lens, the study seeks to identify gaps and propose policy recommendations to address disparities and improve the agricultural sector's efficiency.

The Conference will draw esteemed researchers, respondents, subject experts, scholars, and practitioners in gender studies and agriculture who will grace the event to contribute their invaluable insights to the discourse. Their experiences and perspectives will be at the heart of the discussions, ensuring that the research outcomes are firmly grounded in the reality of the agricultural landscape in Kenya.

This congregation of experts during the Conference will also serve as a validation forum to the research findings owing to the level of experts that will participate through thought-provoking panel discussions, interactive sessions, and research paper presentations, the conference will facilitate robust conversations that drive the momentum for change.
