Kabarak University joined communities across the globe in marking World Cleanup Day on 19 September 2026, with 126 students and two members of staff taking part in a cleanup exercise at Nakuru National Park under the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
The University was represented by members of the Environmental Club and the Presidential Award Group. The delegation was accompanied by Dr. Danice Awinda from the Department of Physical and Biological Sciences and Mr. David Langat, Sports and Recreation Officer, Games and Sports Department.
The students joined other institutions, organisations and community members in cleaning up Nakuru National Park as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation and responsible waste management. The activity brought together stakeholders from different sectors around the shared goal of creating cleaner and healthier environments.
The Nakuru County chapter of World Cleanup Day was hosted by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Nakuru in partnership with the Nakuru County Department of Environment. Participants included representatives from Egerton University, Mount Kenya University, Rift Valley National Polytechnic, various schools, hotels and members of the local community.
The cleanup exercise gave Kabarak University students an opportunity to translate environmental awareness into action while working alongside other stakeholders to care for one of Nakuru's important natural spaces. Their participation also provided an opportunity to strengthen community engagement and promote a culture of environmental responsibility among young people.
A highlight of the day was a cake-cutting ceremony by the Kabarak University Environmental Club, courtesy of Green Cardinal. The gesture added a celebratory touch to the University's participation in the global environmental campaign.
The participants expressed their appreciation to the Kabarak University Management for the support that enabled the students and staff to take part in the initiative. They also acknowledged the support from Green Cardinal, whose contribution helped make the University's participation a success.
The University extends its appreciation to KWS Nakuru and the County Government of Nakuru for planning and hosting the event and for bringing together institutions, organisations and members of the community to promote environmental conservation.
Through initiatives such as the Environmental Club and the Presidential Award Group, Kabarak University continues to provide students with opportunities to engage in activities that promote service, environmental stewardship and positive impact in the wider community.
