Excellence in higher education begins with empowered educators. Reinforcing its commitment to transformative teaching and learning, Kabarak University, through the Directorate of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT), conducted a comprehensive Competency-Based Education (CBE) Training for newly appointed academic staff in the School of Music and Media.
The training was officially opened by the Director of DELT, Dr Lydia Kobia, who welcomed the participants and underscored the University's unwavering commitment to academic excellence through continuous professional development. She encouraged the new lecturers to embrace learner-centred teaching approaches that prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to thrive in today's dynamic world.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive learning sessions that introduced them to the principles and practice of Competency-Based Education (CBE). The programme explored the foundations of learner-centred pedagogy, equipping academic staff with a deeper understanding of outcome-based curriculum delivery and effective instructional design.
A key focus of the training was Bloom's Taxonomy and Constructive Alignment, where participants developed practical skills in formulating clear, measurable Expected Learning Outcomes (ELOs) and aligning them with appropriate teaching strategies and assessment methods to enhance student learning.
The workshop also provided comprehensive training on competency-based assessment, covering assessment planning, rubric design and application, as well as the integration of e-portfolios to evaluate student achievement more effectively. Participants further explored innovative digital technologies that enrich teaching, learning, and assessment, enabling them to create engaging and interactive classroom experiences.
Recognising the growing role of technology in higher education, facilitators introduced participants to the University's Learning Management System (LMS), demonstrating best practices in managing online learning, facilitating student engagement, administering assessments, and organising digital learning resources across both physical and virtual learning environments.
These ongoing capacity-building initiatives ensure that students receive a high-quality, competency-driven education that prepares them to excel professionally, contribute meaningfully to society, and lead with integrity in an ever-evolving global landscape.
