The University Grants and Resource Mobilisation Office has over the years, achieved the following:

  • Established an internal research fund that is competitively awarded to at least five members of the university every year. As a result, the number of research outputs has exponentially increased over the last couple of years
  • Established an internal innovation fund which is competitively awarded to at least three members of the university every year. This has over the years facilitated an upsurge in the number of innovations under incubation, evaluation, protection, and patenting.
  • Set up an internal Outreach & Linkages fund meant to build and facilitate critical networks between the Univesity and its strategic partners
  • Attracted over 35 million shillings from external funding institutions through different partners including Google, Microsoft, National Research Fund (NRF), Safaricom, SEIZZ Group – South Africa, and KENET. This has contributed to the achievement of the big four agenda, vision 2030 & Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Established the Office of Grants & Resource Mobilization to ensure there is sourcing and dissemination of grant opportunities, capacity building, compliance with RFP guidelines, and adherence to the grant issuance requirements.

Early detection of pre-eclampsia using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring using wearable devices and Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTM-NN) on the edge. This study which is in its final stages has developed a mobile application integrated with a smartwatch for contentious blood pressure monitoring among the general population. A predictive model using the Gradient Boosting Regression model utilizing blood pressure readings and activity data has also been developed. A publication from this study can be accessed on http://ir.kabarak.ac.ke/handle/123456789/458

Investigators: Dr. Moses M Thiga (School of Science Engineering and Technology) and Dr. Pamela Kimeto (School of Medicine and Health Sciences)

Early Prediction of Pre-eclampsia Using Long Short Term Memory Networks (LSTM-NN) on the Edge and Effectiveness of Low Dose Aspirin and Calcium as prophylaxis. This project is currently recruiting participants, monitoring their blood pressure using a smartwatch and connected mobile application. Mothers who show signs of potential Pre-eclampsia will then be given Low Dose Aspirin and Calcium as prophylaxis.

Investigators: Dr Pamela Kimeto (School of Medicine and Health Sciences) and Dr Moses M Thiga (School of Science Engineering and Technology).

The HealthIT project supports the implementation of various Information Systems Projects by the Ministry of Health. These systems include the KenyaEMR+, the Child Protection Information System (CPIMS), the Data Analytics Platform (DAP), the Kenya Health Information System (KHIS), the MoH Service Desk, and the MoH Virtual Academy and the Kenya Master Health Facilities List (KMHFL). Kabarak University joined the project in February 2021, as a County Proximate University (CPU) to work with Nakuru, Baringo, Laikipia, and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties.

The Kabarak University team is working with the Kenya EMR+ in providing network setup assessments, network installation and configuration, system deployment, user training, and system evaluation. They are also building capacity for Health Information Systems development among students. The team is also tasked with securing internships and attachment opportunities at health facilities.
