The Kabarak University School of Law recently hosted the Ideal Lawyers’ Breakfast, a mentorship and networking forum designed to prepare first-year students for academic excellence and success in the legal profession. The event brought together students, faculty, and distinguished legal practitioners who shared valuable insights on navigating law school and building sustainable careers.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Ambrose Weda, Advocate of the High Court, urged students to focus on building strong personal and professional foundations that would sustain them throughout their legal journeys. Speaking on the theme “Building Out the Storm,” he emphasized resilience and preparation as cornerstones of success. He challenged the young scholars to “see the end before they begin” by envisioning their long-term goals as a guiding compass and cultivating growth across four pillars: intellectual, social, economic, and spiritual.
Mr. Weda further emphasized that true success in law requires not only academic diligence but also the ability to build meaningful relationships, submit to structured mentorship, develop strong verbal confidence, and embrace physical fitness as part of a balanced lifestyle. He reminded the students that law is not just a career but a calling that demands discipline, vision, and integrity.
The guest speaker, Ms. Atieno Ogolla, an award-winning advocate and author, inspired the students with her reflections on what makes an ideal lawyer. She highlighted critical thinking, mastery of time management, and compassion as the three essential qualities that define excellence in legal practice.
“A lawyer must be a thinker who sees beyond the obvious, a disciplined professional who manages their time wisely, and above all, a compassionate human being who remembers that the law ultimately serves people,” she noted. Encouraging students not to rush through their studies or careers, she reminded them that “the race is not to the swift, but to those who endure in time.”
The session concluded with a shared breakfast and networking opportunity, providing students with a chance to interact with mentors in an informal and engaging setting.
