Promoting Meaningful, Beneficial and Informed Participation of African Communities in the Development and Utilization of AI Solutions Workshop

The workshop on ‘Promoting Meaningful, Beneficial and Informed Participation of African Communities in the Development and Utilization of AI Solutions’ took place on the sidelines of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) 2023 conference on 9th February.

A total of 59 participants from across and beyond Africa attended the event that featured presentations and panels on a wide variety of issues such as; examining the potential of AI in addressing key societal, environmental and developmental issues in Africa; ethical, data protection and Intellectual Property issues in AI development in Africa, and how to engage African communities in the AI development process in a manner that identifies and addresses pertinent ethical, data protection and Intellectual Property issues.

The speakers at the event included; Mr Oladimeji Samuel Sowole (Rise Networks, Lagos, Nigeria), Mr Ronald Katamba (Jaguza Tech, Uganda), Mr Sserunjogi Richard (AirQo - Makerere University, Uganda), Ms Pamela Chogo (Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Tanzania), Dr Richard Wanjohi (HR&Block, Kansas US), Dr Pamela Kimeto (Kabarak University, Keny), Dr Moses Thiga (Kabarak University, Kenya), Dr John Oredo (University of Nairobi), Dr Dina Machuve (DevData Analytics, Tanzania) and Prof Ciira Maina (Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology).

The event was part of the diversity and inclusion events at the conference and was co-organized by Dr Moses M Thiga (Snr Lecturer IT) and Dr Pamela Kimeto (Snr Lecturer Nursing) from Kabarak University.
