Kabarak University Hosts 4th International Research Conference for Mass Communication

Kabarak University School of Music and Media proudly hosted the 4th International Research Conference on Mass Communication on Monday, June 16, 2025. Held under the theme “Artificial Intelligence and the Evolution of Mass Communication: Balancing Innovation with Media and Public Relations Ethics,”  the two-day conference attracted scholars, media professionals, researchers, and students from across Kenya and beyond. It offered a robust discourse on the intersection of AI, media innovation, and ethical communication.

The conference was officially opened with welcoming remarks from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry K. Kiplangat, who emphasized the transformative role of AI in reshaping journalism, public relations, and digital media. He also highlighted the strides Kabarak University has made in media training, research, and innovation, particularly celebrating the university's achievements at national events such as the 2025 Kenya National Drama and Film Festivals.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Wilson Ugangu, Associate Professor at Multimedia University of Kenya, on the topic “Disruption and Change: Rethinking Communication Borders and Boundaries in the AI Era.” Drawing from his vast expertise in media studies and policy, Prof. Ugangu examined the challenges and opportunities that AI presents within African communication systems.

Renowned international guest speakers included Prof. David Blumenkrantz from California State University, Northridge; Ms. Fatuma Sanbur, Internews Regional Manager for Africa; and Dr. Lydia Ayako Mareri from Egerton University. Their presentations explored diverse topics such as AI and digital literacy, the aesthetics and ethics of AI-generated imagery, and the broader implications of AI for media policy and practice.

Plenary sessions were a major highlight of the conference, bringing together experts to explore AI’s role in news production, responsible content moderation, and the delicate balance between automation and human authenticity in communication. These panels offered actionable insights into emerging ethical dilemmas and policy gaps in today’s digital information ecosystem.

In his remarks, Dr. Michael Ndonye, Dean of the School of Music and Media, expressed gratitude to Internews, the Media Council of Kenya, CRECO, and other partners whose support made the conference possible. He commended the efforts of the organizing committee and encouraged participants to engage in further research and collaborations that promote the ethical and impactful use of AI in media.

As AI continues to redefine the boundaries of communication, forums like this remain vital in shaping a future where technology serves truth, trust, and human dignity.
