The general purpose of the program is to train and equip music composers with knowledge and skills in theory and composition of music so as to compose intelligible works in the music industry and/or pursue further studies in theory and composition. The program prepares composers for a variety of composition, teaching, research, conducting and leadership roles in the music sector. The program incorporates both theory and practice. The course of study is based on the understanding that methods of composition of music are dynamic and are subject to human creativity.
Minimum Admission Requirements
KCSE mean grade C+ (Plus) with a minimum of C+ (Plus) in Music
OR
KCSE mean grade C+ (Plus) with a minimum of ABRSM Grade 5 Theory and/or Practical
OR
KCSE mean grade C- (Minus) with a Diploma in Music from an institution recognized by Kabarak University senate and the CUE
OR
KCSE mean grade D (Plain) with a clear progression from certificate and Diploma in music levels
OR
Diploma in Music of Kabarak University or from any other institution recognized by CUE
OR
One principle pass at “A” level obtained at one sitting OR two principal passes obtained at different sittings
OR
Have a minimum of C+ at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) and Substantial aptitude in performance and or composition established during Standard Auditioning Session.
Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, a graduate is expected to:
- Compose various works in Music based on Biblical teachings and doctrines
- Compose African and Western church music
- Compose African and Western popular music
- Compose African and Western incidental music
- Compose African and Western patriotic and political music
- Analyze selected works in medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic and twentieth century periods
- Apply and use various music notation software programs to compose music
- Orchestrate their musical works (African or Western) for small and large orchestras
