Kabarak University is expanding its international engagement in health education and research through a new collaboration with Israel’s Maccabi Healthcare Services, following a public lecture on health system strengthening and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The engagement took place in two sessions. The morning began with a public lecture featuring international and local healthcare perspectives, followed by a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat, who chaired the subsequent discussions and witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The morning public lecture brought together faculty and students from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the School of Pharmacy. Dr. John Borowski, MD, MPH, Family Medicine Residency Program Director at Maccabi Healthcare Services, shared insights into Israel’s healthcare model, highlighting primary healthcare, social health insurance, and coordinated patient care.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat’s remarks were delivered by Prof. John Ochola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic & Research. The address highlighted the importance of quality education, research, innovation and international partnerships in preparing competent, ethical and compassionate health professionals. It also emphasised strengthening primary healthcare, improving referral systems and adopting digital health technologies suited to Kenya’s needs.
The public lecture was followed by a meeting chaired by Prof. Henry Kiplangat, during which the University signed an MoU with Dr. Borowski, representing Maccabi Healthcare Services. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in training, research and elective exchange programmes for health trainees, faculty and professionals.
The engagement also featured Dr. Elijah Terer, CEO of AIC Litein Hospital and a pioneer alumnus of Kabarak University’s Department of Family Medicine, who highlighted the role of partnerships in strengthening healthcare systems. The University also recognised the value of international clinical exposure through the elective placement of Israeli family medicine resident Dr. Ela Sadan at Kabarak University.
The agreement provides a foundation for expanded academic and clinical collaboration, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, professional development and research. Through its School of Medicine and Health Sciences and School of Pharmacy, Kabarak University continues to build partnerships that support health professional training and contribute to improved healthcare outcomes in Kenya.
