Mental Health Awareness Week at Nakuru City Campus

8th July 2024 marked the beginning of mental health awareness week at Nakuru City Campus. The week-long activity was organized by the counseling section led by the campus counselor Ms.Veronicah Kombich supported by a vibrant team of peer counselors. The theme of the activity was campus relationships.

Relationship issues among students are very common evidenced by numerous research findings and media reports, especially on negative consequences of failed relationships such as psychological distress, murder, and suicide cases. The activity therefore aimed at creating awareness of various aspects of relationships for appropriate decision making among students. The counseling team created avenues for one one-on-one counseling sensitization, group counseling forums, creative arts, and community service activities.

On 10th July 2024,  students got a chance to engage in a vibrant debate (Motion: campus relationship). The opposers (those who were against campus relationships) emerged victorious after highlighting numerous negative consequences associated with unhealthy relationships within campus. The event was enriched by the presence of counselor Dr.Rev.Langat who provided valuable insights towards the topic of discussion.

On 11th July 2024 during chapel service, the counseling team presented a very captivating skit titled ‘Behind Every Closed Door’ which pointed out the alarm bells of unhealthy relationships and possible solutions. During the same day the staff members too were not left behind: they were able to participate in an enriching group counseling forum where they explored various ways of dealing with interpersonal conflicts. As the week came to a close the peer counselors partnered with AYLF club members for a day of community service.

The week emphasized the importance of respect, protection, open communication, and authenticity as cornerstones of healthy relationships. This message was reinforced by a powerful quote from a leading expert on domestic abuse, Lundy Bancroft:  "You cannot abuse what you respect and you cannot respect what you abuse."

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the Kabarak University management for their unwavering support in making this week a success. Their commitment to the mental health and well-being of the university community is truly commendable.

Mental Health Awareness Week at Kabarak University was a significant step towards fostering a supportive and positive campus environment. By equipping students and staff with the knowledge and tools to navigate relationships effectively, the counseling department has made a lasting impact on the well-being of the university community.
