Effective teaching goes beyond delivering content. It challenges students to think critically, analyze real-world situations, and make informed decisions. In line with this approach, Kabarak University hosted a half-day Case Teaching Workshop in the ODEL Conference Hall, bringing together academic staff for a practical and engaging professional development session to enhance teaching excellence.
The workshop was organized by the Directorate of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT) under the leadership of the Director, Dr. Lydia Kobia, in collaboration with the Ivey Business School at Western University, Canada. The training forms part of the renowned 39 Country Initiative, a programme that grants eligible universities free access to Ivey's extensive collection of teaching cases. Through this partnership, Kabarak University faculty can access high-quality, regularly updated learning materials used by leading institutions worldwide.

The session was facilitated by Prof. Sui Sui from Toronto Metropolitan University, an experienced educator and global advocate of case-based learning. During the workshop, participants were introduced to the Case Method, an interactive teaching approach widely used by institutions such as Ivey Business School and Harvard Business School. The method shifts learning away from passive memorization and encourages students to actively engage with real-world challenges and decision-making scenarios.
Faculty members explored how case teaching mirrors authentic managerial and professional situations, enabling students to develop critical thinking, communication, interpersonal judgment, and strategic decision-making skills. The approach places students at the center of the learning process, encouraging discussion, analysis, and collaborative problem-solving.
Throughout the workshop, participants received practical guidance on facilitating case-based discussions, from short incident cases to more detailed interview-based scenarios. One example highlighted during the session was the well-known Kazuri Beads case study, which demonstrates how local business experiences can be used to enrich classroom learning and connect theory to practice.

Academic staff were also trained on how to register with Ivey Publishing and identify cases that align with specific learning outcomes. The workshop marks another important step in equipping educators with the tools needed to prepare graduates who can confidently navigate the complexities and opportunities of today's global professional environment.
