Kabarak University Hosts Public Lecture on Media, Culture and Knowledge in Africa

Our School of Music and Media, through the Department of Mass Communication, hosted a public lecture by Prof. Tendai Chari. The session brought together students, lecturers, and media practitioners for a timely conversation on the place of media, culture, and knowledge in shaping Africa's future.

Prof. Chari, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English, Media Studies, and Linguistics at the University of Venda, South Africa, has extensive experience in journalism, media studies, and communication research. His visit allowed students to engage with a scholar whose work examines the changing media landscape across Africa.

Before the lecture, Prof. Chari paid a courtesy visit to the School of Music and Media, where Prof. Mellitus Wanyama and members of the faculty received him. The visit provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on media education, research, and collaboration.

Delivering his lecture, "Coloniality of Power, Being, and Knowledge in Africa: How Media, Culture and Language Keep the Colonial Order Alive," Prof. Chari challenged the audience to reflect on the lasting influence of colonial systems in African societies. He examined how language, media, and cultural institutions continue to shape identity, influence knowledge production, and frame public conversations across the continent.

Students actively engaged in the discussion, raising questions and sharing their views on the role of media in shaping society. The session encouraged them to think critically about the stories they tell, the knowledge they produce, and the importance of grounding communication in African perspectives.

The lecture is part of Kabarak University's ongoing effort to expose students to leading scholars and current conversations that extend beyond the classroom. By creating spaces where ideas can be challenged and debated, the University equips students with the confidence to think independently, engage with complex issues, and contribute meaningfully to the media and communication profession.
