Kabarak University recently facilitated a workshop titled "Promoting Meaningful, Beneficial and Informed Participation of African Communities in the Development and Utilization of AI Solutions" at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) conference.
The conference, held between February 20th and 27th, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada, hosted the workshop as part of its diversity and inclusion track.
A team of faculty members from the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology in the School of Science, Engineering and Technology organized and facilitated the workshop. The team included Dr. Moses M. Thiga, Dr. Andrew Kipkebut, Ms. Mercy Gachoka, and Ms. Daisy Ondwari.
During the workshop, the team presented on various issues impacting African participation in AI development and utilization. These areas included socioeconomic development, agriculture and climate change, and natural language processing. The workshop also explored methods for enhancing African involvement in Artificial Intelligence.
The AAAI annual conference is a leading event in the global Artificial Intelligence research community. In 2024, it attracted over 3,000 presentations. The conference offers a variety of events, including plenaries, workshops, seminars, doctoral and undergraduate student consortiums, tutorials, and a poster program.
