Kabarak University kicked off its Computer Science Education Week in style with a transformative one-day workshop on December 4th, 2024, held at the School of Law's Sawia Auditorium. The workshop, organized with the support of the ENGAGE program, highlighted cutting-edge advancements in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as their game-changing applications in public health.
The event served as a beacon of inspiration, focusing on mentorship and leadership opportunities for women in data science, particularly in health-related fields. Attendees engaged in critical discussions about overcoming challenges and leveraging opportunities for women in data science, while also exploring strategies to mitigate gender biases in health data by incorporating diverse perspectives. A standout panel discussion showcased how AI and data science are poised to drive societal progress in public health. Participants took part in interactive dialogues, shared ideas, and contributed valuable feedback to shape future initiatives.
The workshop was graced by key figures from the ENGAGE program, including Mr. Raphael Kinuthia (ENGAGE Project Manager), Prof. Pamela Kimeto (Regional Coordinator - Rift Valley), and mentors such as Dr. Andrew Kipkebut, Dr. Laura Laura Cheptegei, Daisy Ondwari, Petronilla Mumbua, Aaron Misati, Mr. Charles Mwangi, Kol, and Katana, the program's technician. These experts brought unparalleled insights and expertise, fostering a collaborative environment for learning and networking.
ENGAGE, which stands for "Enabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise in Data Science," represents a joint effort by Kabarak University, the University of Nairobi, and the University of California, San Francisco, with funding from Takeda. This initiative empowers young women in Kenya by equipping them with the skills and mentorship needed to excel in the ever-evolving field of data science. The program underscores the importance of inclusivity and leadership, paving the way for a new generation of women to lead transformative projects in AI and public health.
