Every thriving university community is built on people who are ready to listen, support, and act in moments of need. At Kabarak University, that commitment took centre stage today as student Peer Counsellors gathered at the University Pavilion for an intensive Capacity Building and Team Building Training focused on crisis intervention, psychological first aid, and emergency response.
Led by experts from the Kenya Red Cross Society, the programme immersed participants in practical approaches to recognising emergencies, assessing situations, and responding with confidence and care. Through engaging demonstrations and hands-on exercises, the facilitators underscored the essential responsibilities of a first aider: preserving life, preventing further harm, promoting recovery, and ensuring timely referral to specialised professionals whenever necessary.
A key highlight of the training was Psychological First Aid (PFA), which equips individuals with practical techniques for providing immediate emotional and practical support to people experiencing distress. The sessions emphasised the importance of empathy, active listening, and knowing when professional intervention is required, enabling peer counsellors to become trusted first points of support within the student community.
Interactive scenarios transformed theory into practice, allowing participants to build confidence as they navigated realistic crises. The experience strengthened their understanding of emergency preparedness, teamwork, effective communication, and responsible decision-making, qualities that are invaluable in creating a caring and resilient campus.
At Kabarak University, student well-being extends beyond academic success. By empowering Peer Counsellors with practical, life-saving knowledge and psychological support skills, the University continues to invest in a culture in which compassion, resilience, and service become everyday values that shape campus life.
The University expresses its sincere appreciation to the Kenya Red Cross Society for delivering an insightful and impactful training programme. Gratitude is also extended to Dandelion Africa for facilitating engaging team-building activities that strengthened collaboration, servant leadership, and mutual trust among participants.
As the training concluded, the Peer Counsellors left not only with new knowledge but with a renewed sense of purpose. Equipped to respond with confidence, compassion, and professionalism, they are better prepared to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their fellow students, reflecting Kabarak University's enduring commitment to nurturing graduates who lead with competence, character, and care.
