Kabarak University Counsellors Participate in Transformative Mental Well-being Workshop at Pwani University

Our counsellors recently participated in a transformative workshop on Mental Well-being in Universities in Kenya, held at Pwani University from March 5th to 7th, 2025. The event brought together university counsellors and psychologists from across the country to discuss strategies for enhancing mental health support in higher education institutions.

One of the key highlights of the workshop was a keynote address by Dr. Matilda Mghoi, the CEO and Registrar of the Counsellors & Psychologists Board under the Ministry of Health. She emphasized the critical role that counsellors and psychologists play in universities and urged them to make their presence felt across different platforms. Dr. Mghoi highlighted that counselling services are not only essential in shaping a healthier society but also play a significant role in saving lives.

The event was officially opened by Professor Rose Ruto, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic, Research, and Student Affairs) at Pwani University. She applauded the attending counsellors for their commitment to student and staff well-being. Additionally, Professor James Kahindi, the Vice-Chancellor of Pwani University, graced the occasion and spoke on the importance of counselling in universities. He stressed the need to raise awareness of mental health issues and ensure that those struggling in silence receive the necessary support.

Among the key discussions held during the workshop was a session on drug and substance abuse in universities, led by Prof. John Miteti, the Director of Research, Standards, and Licensing at NACADA, alongside Prof. Halimu Shauri, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Pwani University. This session provided invaluable insights into the rising cases of drug and substance abuse in universities and explored intervention strategies for counsellors. Participants actively engaged in the discussion, exchanging experiences and best practices to tackle this growing challenge.

Other critical topics covered during the workshop included the impact of student relationships on mental well-being, psychological assessments, and self-care for counsellors. These discussions reinforced the importance of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation in counselling to better serve university communities. The event provided a unique opportunity for professionals to gain fresh perspectives and refine their approaches to mental health support.

As the workshop concluded, attendees reflected on the valuable knowledge and strategies they had acquired. The event underscored the idea that as iron sharpens iron, so do professionals sharpen one another. With renewed energy and deeper insights, Kabarak University counsellors are now better equipped to implement improved mental health support structures for students, staff, and the broader university community.

We express deep gratitude to our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, and the University Management Board (UMB) for their support in nurturing mental health initiatives. This workshop has strengthened the university’s commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and mentally healthy environment for all.
