Establishment of UNESCO Chair on Culture and Arts in Education at Kabarak University

Kabarak University through the Vice-Chancellor Professor Henry Kiplangat is proud to announce that the School of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences (SEHSS) has received approval from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to establish a UNESCO Chair on Culture and Arts in Education for Sustainable Education. This marks Kabarak University as the third private university in Kenya to receive this distinction and one of only 10 UNESCO Chairs in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Henry Kiplangat is pleased to announce the establishment of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair on Culture and Arts in Education for Sustainable Education at Kabarak University. This achievement makes Kabarak University the third private university in Kenya to receive this distinction and one of the ten (10) UNESCO Chairs in the country.

The UNESCO Chair at Kabarak University will offer a forum for interaction and cross-disciplinary academic dialogue as well as pedagogical initiatives in the area of Culture and Arts on Education for Sustainable Education. The Chair is aimed at strengthening research activities related to the development of Teacher Education in creative and performing arts and culture for inclusive school curriculum development in Eastern Africa. Through the Chair, the University will establish international collaborations, partnerships and linkages with international universities.

The UNESCO Chair is driven by the conviction that education should be at the forefront in enabling students to learn about values for citizenship, stability, and security which may be achieved through the teaching of history of Africa that has shaped the world. This is in tandem with the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and UNESCO’s official position of promoting the cross-disciplinary role of arts teaching as a fundamental element in education and strengthening the promotion of cultural diversity.
