Access to safe drinking water remains a fundamental challenge for many rural communities, and addressing this need requires practical, sustainable interventions. In response, Kabarak University, through the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Outreach and the Department of Outreach and Linkages, partnered with Water Matters to deliver a community training and outreach programme in Baringo County focused on improving household access to clean and safe water.

The programme emphasized hands-on capacity building, with community members trained on water filter assembly, correct operation of filtration systems, routine backwashing, and safe water storage practices. The sessions were designed to ensure that participants could confidently maintain and use the filters over the long term, promoting ownership and sustainability.

Upon completion of the training, water filters were distributed to vulnerable households within the community, many of whom rely on open surface water sources for their daily drinking water needs. This approach ensured that beneficiaries not only received appropriate water treatment technologies but also understood how to use them effectively.

By equipping communities with practical skills and reliable water treatment solutions, the initiative aims to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, improve overall health outcomes, and enhance quality of life. The outreach reflects Kabarak University’s commitment to community-engaged scholarship and to advancing health and wellbeing through collaborative, impact-driven partnerships.
