We recently hosted a delegation from Kenya’s State Department for Higher Education, led by Martha Kamau and Austine Bwire, for an assessment of the institution’s implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE). The evaluation focused on the University’s Curriculum Conversion and Implementation Plan, the adoption of learner-centred pedagogy, and the impact of the institution’s “CBE Champions” mentoring programme.
The delegation reviewed the successful rollout of CBE across various schools and the integration of digital infrastructure supporting teaching and learning. The team also noted the University’s commitment to transitioning all academic programmes to the CBE framework by the end of 2026.
The delegation was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research), Prof. John Ochola, alongside the Registrar (Academic & Research), Dr. Antony Somba, and the DELT Director, Dr. Lydia Kobia, who were present in support of the engagement. University leadership emphasized that Kabarak is championing a transformative pedagogical shift that prioritizes student competencies, practical skills, and industry readiness over traditional teaching approaches.
Prof. Ochola highlighted the critical role played by the Directorate of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (DELT) in coordinating faculty capacity-building initiatives and supporting the effective implementation of CBE across the institution. He noted that the University is committed not only to meeting national standards, but also to setting a benchmark for excellence in higher education within the region.
The visit concluded with the state officials commending the University for its proactive KABU-CBE Framework and its alignment with Kenya Vision 2030. Martha Kamau and Austine Bwire praised the strong institutional ownership demonstrated by the University leadership, adding that continuous staff development and technical support systems are essential for sustainable success.
