On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Kabarak University School of Music and Media (SMM) hosted a vibrant Mentorship Program in collaboration with the Constitution and Reform Education Consortium (CRECO). The program aimed to empower future journalists—the next generation to tackle the critical issue of fake news in Kenya's digital landscape.
Mrs. Dorcas Kibenei (Ag. Head of Department Mass Communication), opened the session by emphasizing the importance of media literacy in a world saturated with information. Students engaged in lively discussions with seasoned CRECO's Chief Executive Director, Mr. Joshua Changwony, and his professional team, exploring creative ideas for digital democracy. The session delved into utilizing online platforms for citizen engagement, promoting responsible social media use, and harnessing the power of storytelling to combat misinformation.
This interactive workshop equipped students with practical fact-checking techniques. They learned to identify red flags in online content, verify information from credible sources, and debunk fake news effectively. The program culminated in an engaging activity where student groups analyzed real-world examples of Kenyan fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, flexing their newly acquired critical thinking skills.
Kabarak University, through such initiatives, remains committed to nurturing a generation of informed and responsible digital citizens. By fostering collaboration and promoting media literacy, we empower young minds to navigate the complexities of the digital age and contribute to a more informed and democratic Kenya.
