Empowering Students Through Peer Counseling Training to Promote Mental Wellness Across Campuses

The Kabarak University Counselling Section, with immense support from the Office of the Dean of Students and the Chaplaincy Department, successfully conducted a three-day Peer Counseling Training from 3rd to 5th July 2025 at the Main Campus. This biannual training brought together selected student participants from both the Main Campus and the Nakuru City Campus. The objective of the training was to enhance peer support structures by equipping students with basic counseling skills to help them address a variety of mental health challenges within the student population.

The training was organized and facilitated by the university’s team of professional counselors, who developed and delivered a comprehensive and interactive curriculum. A major highlight of the program was the participation of staff from the NACADA Nakuru Branch. Their sessions focused on alcohol and drug abuse, covering critical areas such as the negative effects of substance use, stages of addiction, and available support systems. The trainees gained important insights drawn from current, research-based findings that reflect real-life issues affecting youth.

Throughout the training, students were introduced to key knowledge areas essential for effective peer counseling. These included Faith Development, Introduction to Peer Counseling, Basic Counseling Skills, Counseling Theories, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling, Self-Awareness and Life Skills, Introduction to Mental Health Disorders, Personal Growth and Behavioural Change, Career Guidance and Job Search Skills, and Contemporary Issues Affecting University Students. In addition, the students were empowered with knowledge on ethical issues in counseling to ensure that they can offer responsible and professional support to their peers.

The third and final day of the training emphasized practical engagement. Trainees were grouped and guided through interactive activities where they demonstrated the knowledge and skills they had acquired. These sessions were closely supervised by the counselors, and each group was assessed based on performance. The overall outcome was impressive, with most groups displaying a high level of preparedness for their new responsibilities as peer counselors.

As the training came to a close, the new cohort of peer counselors elected their leadership team to help coordinate future activities. This milestone was celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing a fresh beginning and commitment to serve. The joy and unity shared during this event reflected the strong bond and sense of purpose developed during the training.

The success of this peer counseling training was made possible through the unwavering support and approval of the University Management. Their continued dedication to student welfare and holistic development remains central to the university’s mission of nurturing well-rounded individuals grounded in Christian values.

Indeed, the July 2025 Peer Counseling Training was a meaningful and transformative experience. It prepared a new generation of student leaders who are now equipped to promote mental wellness, offer peer support, and contribute positively to the well-being of the Kabarak University community.
