The Kabarak University Department of Guidance and Counseling is actively engaged in promoting student and staff well-being. From May 22nd to 24th, 2024, a team of counselors from the department participated in a workshop organized by the Kenya Universities Professional Counselors' Association (KUPCA) at Chuka University.
The workshop's theme, "Emerging Issues and Trends: Mental Health in Universities in Kenya," addressed critical topics faced by students in today's university environment. These included:
- Life in Campus Today: Social media, cults, and the impact of these trends on mental health.
- The Challenge of Immediate Gratification: The influence of 'sponsors', drug use, and a culture of instant gratification on student well-being.
- Cohabitation and its Implications: Exploring the growing trend of cohabitation among students and potential interventions.
- Understanding Addictions: Symptoms, causes, and strategies for intervention.
- The Power of Emotional Intelligence: Equipping students with the skills to manage emotions effectively.
- Essential Life Skills: Equipping students with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of university life.
The Kabarak University Counseling Department offers comprehensive support services designed to promote the holistic development of students and staff. We believe in nurturing the "whole person," encompassing psychological, moral, and spiritual well-being.
Kabarak University boasts a vibrant team of well-trained peer counselors. These individuals understand the unique challenges faced by their peers and provide a bridge to connect students who may need additional support with professional university counselors.
Peer counselors are trained in various areas, including counseling theories, basic counseling skills, communication skills, professional ethics, career guidance, and crisis intervention. They are readily available to assist students in classes, hostels, and non-residential areas, easily identifiable by their branded blue t-shirts worn every Thursday.
All counselors at Kabarak University operate under the Dean of Students department and are members of professional counseling bodies, including KUPCA and KCPA. This ensures they adhere to best practices and maintain the highest level of professional service.
We encourage students and staff to reach out to our dedicated team of counselors for confidential support and guidance.
Remember, you are not alone. The Kabarak University Counseling Department is here to help!
