In a collaborative effort to tackle the rising concerns of depression and suicide among students in Kenyan institutions of higher learning, counselors from Kabarak University have actively participated in the annual workshop organized by the Kenya Universities Professional Counselors Association (KUPCA). Held at The University of Nairobi's Main Campus, this three-day event brings together counselors from various universities across Kenya to delve into crucial topics under the theme, 'Depression and suicide among students in institutions of higher learning in Kenya: Look around, look within.'
KUPCA, established in 2013, comprises members from both public and private universities in Kenya. Kabarak University, committed to the well-being of its students, is an active participant in this association. The workshop covers a spectrum of pertinent issues, reflecting the multifaceted nature of mental health challenges faced by students. Some of the key topics include the prevalence, signs, and symptoms of depression in universities, self-care strategies for therapists, the intersection of spirituality and mental health, gender-based violence within university settings, as well as anxiety and mood disorders prevalent among students. Notably, the workshop places a significant focus on understanding and addressing the alarming rates of suicide among university students.
The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama, officially opened the workshop today, emphasizing the urgency of collaborative efforts in fostering mental health awareness and support within academic institutions. The event is scheduled to conclude on November 30, 2023.
Kabarak University expresses gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Henry K. Kiplangat, for his unwavering support in championing mental health initiatives. This commitment reflects the university's dedication to creating a supportive and nurturing environment for its students.
As universities continue to evolve, so do the challenges faced by students. The annual workshop serves as a platform for counselors to share insights, strategies, and best practices, fostering a collective approach to addressing mental health concerns. By actively participating in such initiatives, Kabarak University demonstrates its commitment to promoting the holistic well-being of its student body and contributing to a broader conversation on mental health in Kenyan higher education.
