Enhancing Information Management Skills: Meru National Polytechnic Students Visit Kabarak University's Library

In an effort to foster academic collaboration and enhance knowledge sharing, Kabarak University recently welcomed a group of diploma and degree students from Meru National Polytechnic. The 17 students, who are pursuing their studies in the Computing and Informatics Department, embarked on a visit to Kabarak University's impressive library facility. During their visit, they had the opportunity to explore various aspects of information management and gain insights into cataloging, classification, abstracting, indexing, conservation, and dissemination of information, among other essential skills.

As one of the leading universities in Kenya, Kabarak boasts a state-of-the-art library that serves as a valuable resource center for students and researchers. The library houses an extensive collection of books, journals, and digital resources covering various disciplines, including computing and informatics.

During their time at the library, the Meru National Polytechnic students were exposed to the intricacies of cataloging, which involves the systematic organization and description of library materials. They learned about the importance of accurate cataloging in facilitating efficient access to information and supporting research endeavors.

Classification, another crucial aspect of information management, was also a key focus of the visit. The students had the opportunity to explore different classification systems used in libraries. Understanding classification systems is essential for effectively arranging library materials and assisting users in locating relevant resources.

In addition to cataloging and classification, the students delved into abstracting and indexing, which involve summarizing and organizing information to enhance its accessibility. They gained insights into the process of creating abstracts and indexes, enabling them to develop skills that can be applied in various information-intensive fields.

Conservation and preservation of library materials were also emphasized during the visit. The students were introduced to techniques and practices employed to safeguard and prolong the lifespan of books, documents, and other valuable resources. Learning about preservation ensures that future generations can continue to benefit from the knowledge contained within these materials.

Finally, the Meru National Polytechnic students explored the dissemination of information, recognizing the vital role of libraries in facilitating the flow of knowledge. They gained an understanding of different methods and technologies employed to share information effectively, including digital libraries, online databases, and information retrieval systems.

The experience gained during this visit will undoubtedly prove beneficial for the future careers of the Meru National Polytechnic students, equipping them with valuable skills that will set them apart in the field of computing and informatics.
