Maintaining excellence in legal education requires more than strong teaching. It calls for regular independent evaluation to ensure academic programmes continue to meet national standards and the changing needs of the legal profession. It was in this spirit that Kabarak University welcomed an accreditation team from the Council of Legal Education (CLE) for a scheduled quality review of its Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme as part of the licence renewal process. Under Kenya's legal education framework, institutions offering law programmes are licensed for five years and undergo periodic quality audits and renewal reviews to maintain their accreditation.
The visit commenced with a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, at the University Boardroom before the delegation proceeded to the School of Law for the day's review programme, which included presentations, discussions and a tour of the University's teaching and learning facilities.
The Council of Legal Education is the national statutory body mandated to regulate legal education and training in Kenya. Through accreditation, licensing and quality assurance, the Council works with universities to maintain high standards in legal education and ensure graduates are well prepared for professional practice.
Welcoming the delegation, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat described the exercise as an important opportunity for reflection and institutional growth rather than simply a regulatory requirement.
"The Bachelor of Laws programme occupies a unique place within our University. It is one of our flagship academic programmes and reflects our vision of producing graduates who combine intellectual excellence with professional competence, ethical leadership and a lifelong commitment to justice and service," he said.
The review was led by the School of Law under the leadership of Dean Prof. John Ambani, alongside Associate Dean Dr. Mbori, who joined members of faculty in presenting the University's progress across key areas of legal education. The presentations highlighted developments made during the current licensing cycle, including curriculum enhancement, strengthened quality assurance systems, faculty development, research, student support services, experiential learning and continued investment in modern teaching infrastructure.
The University's presentation also demonstrated how the School of Law continues to align its programmes with emerging trends in legal education by strengthening clinical legal education, expanding research opportunities and integrating practical learning experiences that prepare graduates for the realities of legal practice.
As part of the review, the accreditation team toured key facilities supporting the programme, including lecture rooms, the Moot Court and the law library, gaining first-hand insight into the learning environment available to students.
Through sustained investment in academic programmes, research, infrastructure and student success, the University continues to strengthen its position as one of Kenya's leading institutions for legal education while preparing graduates to serve society with integrity, professionalism and distinction.
