The pursuit of justice is not always won in a courtroom. Sometimes, it begins with a conversation. This week, Kabarak Law School became the meeting point for some of Kenya's finest young legal minds as it hosted the Nyayo Intervarsity Mediation Competition, a platform that challenges students to resolve disputes through dialogue, negotiation, and sound legal reasoning.
The competition opened on 14th July 2026, bringing together eight teams from Kabarak University, Africa Nazarene University, Strathmore University, the University of Embu, the University of Nairobi, and Egerton University. Across the preliminary rounds, participants tackled realistic legal disputes that tested their ability to analyse issues, think critically, communicate clearly, and guide parties towards practical solutions.
The competition gathered pace on 15th July 2026 with the quarter-final and semi-final rounds. The day's programme began with remarks from Prof. John Osogo Ambani, Dean of Kabarak Law School, and Sir Gordon Ogola, Director of the Centre for Multiple Systems of Justice, who welcomed participants and guests for another day of engaging competition.
The keynote address was delivered by Hon. Tito Gesora, Chief Magistrate at Nakuru Law Courts. Drawing from his experience on the bench, he spoke about the growing role of mediation in expanding access to justice and helping resolve disputes efficiently while preserving relationships. His remarks challenged the students to view mediation not simply as an academic exercise, but as an essential skill for the future of legal practice.
As the rounds progressed, the level of competition continued to rise. Teams demonstrated confidence, preparation, and professionalism as they worked through complex mediation scenarios before a panel of experienced adjudicators. Every round demanded careful listening, persuasive communication, and the ability to find common ground without compromising legal principles.
By the end of the day, two teams had earned their place in the championship round. Kabarak University Law School and Strathmore Law School will meet in the Grand Finale on 16th July 2026, where they will compete for the Nyayo Intervarsity Mediation title.
As mediation continues to play a greater role in resolving disputes, opportunities such as this equip future advocates with the practical skills, judgment, and confidence needed to serve society beyond the courtroom.
The University congratulates all participating teams for their outstanding performances and wishes the finalists every success as they prepare for the championship showdown.
